Springer spaniels – both English and Welsh – are widely agreed to be fun-loving animals. There are many pictures posted online of these dogs ’springing’. Their name comes from the way they flush game birds from cover. They surprise the birds on the ground, and as the bird takes flight the springer spaniels jump into the air to try to catch the bird, though they never do! They are recognised for their fun loving, hence the very large number of searches online for funny springer spaniels.

Springing is in Their Genes

Before they spring, they have to locate the game, and they do this using their excellent noses and hunting ability. From the time of being small pups, they are seeking with their noses, back and forth. As the pups develop, it is important not to dampen this trait that they have – let them wander off and seek. Their loyalty will bring them back. Their excellent noses mean that they are widely used by armed forces and police forces. They just love sniffing around!

Retrieving Comes Naturally

Because they love to retrieve (it does not need to be trained, just shaped), they are always returning with sticks – a swim in the river or sea will rarely see them returning without something in their jaws, ready for a throw and a fetch and barking for action. They are always active, ready and willing to hunt and fetch. This leads to hours of fun for dog and owner alike.

If the springer has been trained by an enthusiastic owner who can inject some excitement into the command ‘fetch’ then treasure hunts using old socks or gloves will give him hours of fun. When you go walking, take a couple of these ‘dummies’ with you. As you walk, hide them in bushes or under behind trees. As you return, then send your springer ahead with command ‘fetch’, and watch him go seeking the dummies.

Intelligent

Although some of the things they do might seem crazy, they are very intelligent and sensitive to mood and moment. They will get infected by family fun and laughter. My kids had great and messy fun with my springers.

Water Lovers (Mud Too)!

They are water lovers and mud lovers, as befits hunting dogs. It can be very annoying at times when they find a patch of muck and come back pleased with themselves having rolled in it. But on reflection it does make you laugh, simply because to them it is such fun. I can remember recalling one of my dogs late one summer evening – he was swimming in the harbour on the last of the outgoing tide – he came back running through the harbour mud. Moments like this seem trivial, and yet they stick in my mind as very happy memories of fun loving dogs, even though I was very cross at the time!

So, yes, springer spaniels are great fun but you do have to be prepared for the muck and the cleaning up. Always wear old clothes when walking them, and keep a couple of blankets or an old tarp ready in your truck or car for the inevitable dirty dog or clean wet dog.

A search online will quickly turn up some great pictures of these dogs springing, retrieving and having fun. For me, they are the best all-round breed there is, combining a compact size with intelligence and loyalty, and of course, the infectious ability to have fun!

If you have brought in a dog to your household, you have brought in a lot of responsibilities ranging from securing it good food to securing it good training.

While every canine breed is different from the other, a lot of owners face some common challenges while house training dogs.

Some of those problems and their suggested solutions have been mentioned below.

1) A lot of dog holders face challenges while obedience training their young dogs. Sometimes they don’t respond to certain kinds of obedience training, whether leash or reward training.

The best way of solving this problem is to change your method of training from one to the other. If this fails, you can seek professional help for training your puppy.

2) Some puppies take long to command train. This difficulty appears because dogs can’t speak and so they can’t understand words as well as gesticulations.

To overcome this issue it is advisable to use words together with body language, so that your dog can correlate between them.

3) The source of trouble for some owners is communication with their dogs, as they get distracted easily.

Many canines have a short attention span, and for you to have their attention you need to use methods such as talking loudly, keeping them on a leash or jostling them when they are not listening

While it may take some time, they will get used to having to listen to you no matter what.

4) Feeding a dog can sometimes be a problem. If facing problems feeding your dog, the food quality could be your problem. If the dog doesn’t like how something tastes, he will not eat even if hungry.

It might be a good idea to change the food you have been getting for your pet until now if this happens.

5) Your dog might refuse to go to its crate and stay. Well, the issue might be with the crate itself.

The box might lack space or the material might be uncomfortable. It could also just be dirty; and could simply require cleaning.

Once you deduce what is giving your canine friend problems, figuring out a solution is much easier.

Description: The Manchester Terrier comes in two heights, the standard and toy. The standard height is 15 to 16 inches with an average weight of around 18 pounds, with the bitch being slightly less at 17 pounds. The Toy breed is 10 to 12 inches in height. Their weight is around 6 to 8 pounds, and in the United States they are accepted at 12 pounds. This breed’s head is closely skinned, extended, and narrow. The head is almost flat with a slight notch to the forehead. Their ears when natural are V in shape and half erect, with the folded front flap. In the toy variety ears are usually totally erect. If cropping is permitted, the ears are cropped long and pointed. The eyes are almond shaped, and dark in colour. The teeth should meet in a level or scissor bite. They have a black nose. The tail is thick at the base and tapers to a point. The coat comes in black and tan, with distinctive starting and stopping points, and does not have blending. The coat is dense and short and tight to the skin.

History: Here we see the oldest known Terrier breed. The Manchester Terrier, like most terriers, were bred for ratting. This breed started in the 19th century, in the city of Manchester, in England. This breed is known as the best rat killing breed, of dog. In a contest, held in Manchester, a dog called Billy was said to have killed a hundred rats in 6 minutes and 13 seconds. This breeds’ gene pool comes from crossing black and tan terriers with the Whippet. This breed became a companion dog in Queen Victoria’s era, where small dogs became popular as people followed Queen Victoria’s lead. The Doberman Pinscher looks in fact, comes from this breed rather than the other way around.

Temperament: The Manchester Terrier is intelligent and eager, to learn. With their ability and a true Terrier nature they can be independent and faithful. This dog is exceptionally lively and will require plenty of walking and play. This dog will enjoy plenty of exercise off the lead, as their need to be running is high. This breed loves to please their owners, and can be fantastic in activities such as agility training or obedience trials. With their great want of your attention, they do require good leadership from their owner, and plenty of mental and physical exercise. Without the daily activities, this dog can get stressed, when left alone. This can lead to boredom and destructiveness, and they have been reported to be excessive barkers if ignored. If good leadership is established, you as the owner are allowed to leave the dog, but the dog is not allowed to leave you. So if your dog feels they are the leader you should not leave them. So establishing good leadership with your dog can prevent so many problems and give your dog the confidence to be alone. This breed loves to be with their family and will love nothing more than walking with them daily. Socialise, this dog well as a puppy, and give good rules and leadership to gain the best from this breed.

Health issues: This breed can have glaucoma, blood problems, Von Willebrand’s, which is a bleeding problem, this is rare. They may have heat problems so keep a good check of their skin in hot weather.

Grooming: This breed has little to no grooming requirements. Rub over with a rubber brush to add a shine to their coat as and when you wish.

Living conditions: The Manchester Terrier is good for apartment living, providing, they have had plenty of outdoor exercise. This breed is active in doors and will do well with the small size garden but can cope without a garden.
