For your older dog, arthritis can really put a halt to her activities. It also impacts his overall health as he isn’t exercising as much. You can use these tips to give your dog relief from symptoms and pain of arthritis in dogs.

1. Lose weight: For older dogs, arthritis is only one of the issues that can be triggered by an excessive amount of body fat. An overweight dog will suffer more with any arthritic pain. Help your pet lose weight by switching to a “light” dog food, and making sure he gets some gentle exercise. You should also avoid giving your senior dog table scraps—”people food” can be very calorie rich and could contribute to your dog’s weight problem.

2. Supplement for joint health: Find a homeopathic supplement that’s easy to give to him as well as offer support for joint mobility. A natural supplement can help by alleviating stress on his joints, and help preserve cartilage. Joint supplements are safe and effective for older dogs, and should be added to your dog’s health plan as soon as you consider him an “older” dog.

3. Provide a soft bed: Older dogs with arthritis must have a clean, warm and soft bed to help him sleep. If your dog has always slept on the couch, he may not be able to climb up as easily. Provide him with a soft bed of his own, and keep it in a warm area of your home. Large breeds may find it easier if the bed is raised a few inches off the ground.

4. Exercise: Encourage your older dog with arthritis to take part in slower gentler exercise routines. A short walk around the block will help keep your dog fit, and help him preserve the muscles in his legs and back.

5. Offer accessibility options: Older dogs with arthritis still need to be a part of the family. If your dog likes to travel in the car, invest in a small pet ramp so he can climb inside without injuring himself. Add accessibility devices like ramps to help your dog get in the truck or on the couch. You may need to offer some support with a strap or harness while your pet is climbing up or down stairs (down can be more difficult for some dogs, as they can’t control the speed of their descent).

In older dogs, arthritis is a serious condition that can affect their quality of life if left untreated. Fortunately, arthritis and its effects can generally be dealt with using the techniques above. One of the best things you can do for your older dog with arthritis is to take him to the vet for an evaluation and examination. Your vet will be able to work with you to determine the best treatment plan for your dog.

The dog health can be affected by different factors in the same way as the human health. You can feed you dog with high quality dog food, buy perfect dog chews, take care of it but sometimes some illnesses, infections can happen with your dog and in the most cases only the specialist can identify them and assign the proper treatment.

But there are many situations in life when the doctor can be not available and you are the only ones who can help your dog health. Therefore, every dog owner should have a small first aid kit.

Such kind of kit should contain at least thermometer, medicine dropper, forceps, bandages, cotton wool, castor or olive oil, antibiotics and sulphanilamide preparations. From time to time check out the kit and get rid of the medicines with the expired dates.

If there is a need to lubricate the throat of your dog, it is better to do this procedure not alone since it is very unpleasant for the dog and it doesn’t stay calmly at the same place. One person should keep the mouth of the dog opened and the other try to lubricate the throat with the sticks wrapped with cotton.

If you need to give your dog the medicine in form of tablets, just open the mouth of the dog widely, put the tablet on the root of the tongue and close it at once. Liquid medicines cannot be poured into the open mouth, when inhaled it can cause pneumonia. Best of all, without opening the dog’s mouth pull the edge of the lips and insert the medicine.

I hope this article will help you to help your dog when it is necessary and improve your dog health.

At first, new puppies are cuddly and smell sweet. But once a few days have passed, the new puppy smell turns to stinky puppy smell. This means it’s time for a puppy bath. Before bathing a puppy, you should make sure that your puppy is eight weeks old or older. You should help your puppy adjust to bath time. Having your puppy sit or stand in the tub may help. If their first puppy bath is a pleasant experience, future baths will be much easier. Before the bath is over, you should make sure that your puppy is completely rinsed. Getting soap in her ears or in her eyes will ruin a first bath.

Although most dogs do enjoy playing in water, they often do not enjoy bath time. Many puppies have very delicate skin and shampoo can irritate them. It is important to use a dog shampoo that is specially formulated for puppies and their sensitive skin. Before bathing a puppy, it is recommended that the puppy be eight weeks old or older. You should only bathe a puppy once a month. An option to get you through weeks without baths is to use puppy wipes, which help you get rid of dirt while giving your puppy a fresh scent.

Breaking in your dog to enjoy baths is important. Your dog will certainly be uncomfortable at first, but if you establish a set routine your dog will feel more comfortable with baths. One suggestion is to allow the dog to sit in a water-filled tub. Pour very small amounts of water on your dog. This will help your dog acclimate to the feeling and temperature of the water. It is very likely that you will not be able to complete a bath your first attempt. You may need to try several times to get your puppy accustomed to the routine.

Before you begin bathing your puppy, make sure you have all the items you will need close at hand. Gather the puppy shampoo, a towel and something to hold water for rinsing. The latter item will help you not get water or soap in your puppy’s eyes or ears. You should also keep cotton balls and a soft cloth nearby. The cotton balls are perfect for cleaning your puppy’s ears. The soft cloth is used to clean your puppy’s face.

Bathing a puppy can become an easy part of a dog owner’s grooming process. It just takes time to create a routine that works for you and your puppy. The first bath is critical for establishing success in the future. The most important thing to remember is to use gentle shampoo on a puppy that is at least eight weeks old or older. Keep the first bath short and focus more on making the puppy comfortable instead of getting him squeaky clean. To make your life easier, have everything you need at your fingertips before you start on your puppy bath adventure.

If you‘ve ever owned a dog, you understand that those cuddly canines are part of the family. Occasionally, you may want to surprise your furry friend with a special treat. In order to find the perfect gift, consider what makes your dog happy. Like humans, animals want to be comfortable, entertained, and pampered. There are many unique ideas that can satisfy your pet’s needs.

You can spoil your dog by purchasing a soft, comfortable pet bed. Look for one that is easily washable and made of durable fabric. A new dog bed will give your pet a cozy place to call its own.
Heighten the amount of pleasure your dog gets from nap time by playing music. There are many pet oriented CD collections available. Peaceful music can calm your dog during his down time or soothe him while you’re away.
A day at a doggy spa is a great way to show your appreciation for your dog’s loyalty. He will be invigorated and refreshed when he returns home.
Buy a grooming glove. There are a variety of gloves that will gently remove hair and improve circulation in the skin. Your dog will enjoy the rub down while you enjoy a cleaner home.
Dogs love to dig. Instead of allowing your pet to tear up your garden, buy a small sandbox. Throw a few toys in the box, so your dog can satisfy his urge to dig and bury.
Your dog is always willing to gobble down a special treat. Activity treat balls can be filled with goodies that are slowly released during play.
Every dog loves a good car ride. Buy your traveling companion a car harness for a safe trip. Your dog will grow to love the harness because it’s a promise of an upcoming adventure.
A bone is a classic gift for your frisky pooch. Bones help clean and strengthen teeth, and large ones provide hours of entertainment.
Dogs enjoy interaction with their owners. Buy your dog a pull toy made of rubber or rope, and he will delight in the extra attention.
If your dog doesn’t mind wearing clothing, treat him to a special outfit. Even a bandana can bring out your dog’s playful personality.

Buying a special gift is a great way to show your affection and appreciation for your lovable pup.

The sit command is one of the more standard and basic commands that you can teach your dog and aside from impressing friends and family, the added benefit of teaching your dog to sit is that he/she is learning basic obedience, which is essential for all kinds of future training to keep them (and everyone around them) safe.

First of all, stand in front of your dog.

Next, hold a treat right near your dog’s nose, just out of his or her reach. Then slowly move the treat over your dog’s head and toward his or her tail.

As you do this, say your dog’s name and then give him/her the command “Sit.”

Remember to keep the treat at nose level. If the treat is held too high, your dog will jump.

Now say the word “good” at the exact second the dog sits. They will sit as a natural instinct at first, because they are essentially waiting for the treat (and likely get bored of standing so tentatively!). So, when they actually do sit and they get the treat, your dog will soon begin to learn the connection between sitting and being rewarded.

It is at this point that you’ve initiated another command that can come in useful for all sorts of future training scenarios.

Don’t forget to praise your dog in spades and give them a treat for any movement that resembles the sit position.

Don’t be too hard on them at first, just let them pick it up naturally (and they will). When your dog is consistently sitting on command, you can release them from their sitting position with the “release” or “free” command.

This exercise should be repeated for 5 minutes at a time. Remember not to go overboard on this one, as you don’t want your dog to get fat in the process!

If you’d like to know even more ways to train your dog to be well behaved, play safe and respect your every command, then visit http://www.bestdogtrainingreview.com today and see how anybody, including you and your dog, can learn to live in perfect harmony without frustrating and aggressive episodes of bad dog behavior.

Dog Travel Safety

One thing that you can definitely say without much objection is that dogs love going on vacation and traveling with their families. Some breeds love it so much, that it would appear they were demanding this type of activity happening on a regular basis. Suffice it to say, if you and yours are taking a dog on a vacation for the first time, here are 5 precautions to take where traveling with your dog is concerned.

Always protect them from the heat – no matter how cool it feels to humans, remember that leaving a dog inside of a vehicle could have some sad consequences. Even if you leave the windows open slightly for ventilation purposes, a car can heat up like an oven and kill your dog.

Make sure that they are safe and secure when the vehicle is on the road – you wouldn’t just let one of your children wander around out of their car seats and/or seat belt so why would you do that with your dog? There are a number of harnesses available on the market today that enable you to secure your dog by attaching them to their crates and the seat belts.

Keep them fed and hydrated – even though you may be tempted to cut back a little while you are traveling, you should make sure that they get fed as often as when they are at home and have plenty of water to drink in or out of your vehicle.

Don’t forget the leash – whether you let them run around loose or not at home when you take them for a walk, you want to make sure that they are never off their dog leash and collars, unless they are in for the night with you. A primary rule of thumb to follow with dogs, when they are leash-trained, is that you never want to give them an opportunity to run from you when they are not in familiar surroundings.

If your dog is flying with you – most baggage and cargo areas in the bellies of airplanes are not climate controlled and this can be dangerous as well as life-threatening to your dog. If you absolutely have to fly, schedule your vacation in the cooler months of spring or fall when the temperatures are not too cold or hot. Always use an airline approved pet carrier and dog travel gear for safety and comfort of your pet.

Although all of this may seem like common sense to most people, you would be surprised at the number of pets that perish in those airline baggage and cargo bays.

Bacteria is a major cause of kidney disease in dogs. It is pretty common for a dog to suffer from urinary tract infections. Infections like this are caused by bacteria that get in through the urethra and make it to the bladder. When these infections go untreated, then the bacteria can get into the kidneys. There, it will cause damage and loss of function which is irreversible.

Trauma is another common cause of kidney failure in dogs. If your dog is hit by a car or kicked hard enough it could cause kidney failure. Fungal infections can also cause trauma to the tissues of the kidney. There are two main fungal infections that often cause kidney damage, and these are blastomycosis and canine valley fever.

Obstructions in the bladder or urinary tract can also damage the kidney of your dog. These obstructions are most commonly caused by bladder or kidney stones. Stones like this are prone to becoming contaminated with bacteria, which then increases the infection risk. When an obstruction blocks the ability for urine to flow freely, then it can become life threatening in only a day or two.

If your dog ingests toxins, this can also cause kidney disease. It is the job of kidneys to filter toxins but when a toxin is too strong, it can cause them to shut down. The most common toxin ingested by dogs is antifreeze, because it has a sweet taste that dogs like. Other things that can cause kidney failure if ingested are heavy metals, rat poison, some types of plants and turpentine. Keep all of these things out of reach of your dog.

Some types of medications that your dog must take can cause damage to the kidneys over time. You can avoid this by only giving your dog all natural medications for whatever medical problem they are having.

As you can see, canine kidney disease has a variety of causes. Some of these can be prevented, and others cannot. The most common cause of kidney failure in dogs is old age and this cannot be treated. However, keeping toxins out of reach, exercising your dog, helping to keep him clean and groomed, plus a little extra help using these natural remedies will go a long way to preventing canine kidney disease.

Dachshunds are an old German dog breed, bred to pursue badgers. They needed to be able to work alone, be brave and intelligent so they could chase down and kill their prey. These characteristics can still be seen today in Dachshunds, showing themselves in behaviors including barking and biting. They can rapidly become problematic if Dachshunds are not well taught as puppies. The first time you see any sort of dominance or aggression in your Dachshund puppy, especially biting, must take action.

Often owners will express amusement at their Dachshund puppy biting them, thinking it is amusing or endearing. What they don’t realize is that these small nips are shows of dominance that can grow to outright aggression later on in life. The final consequence is that dogs end up being taken to a shelter or, even worse, being put to sleep.

Start Young
Before you adopt a Dachshund puppy go and look at a few litters. Note how the puppies play and test out behaviors with, and get feedback from, each other. With puppy biting watch how if one puppy nips another, the one who was nipped will most likely bite back. This lets the first puppy know that biting is not acceptable and, after a few repetitions, the behavior stops and the puppy understands not to bite.

After you bring your Dachshund puppy home you have to be constant and not let the biting restart. The initial occasion you notice your Dachshund puppy biting you must take action and begin training. In young puppies the biting you glimpse is still play biting, testing out behaviors to glimpse which are reasonable and which are not. Never hit any Dachshund, especially not a young puppy. They are still in their socialization and learning stage and will not recognize what has happened. Striking Dachshund puppies will just startle them and might result in further behavioral issues later in life.

The best technique to stop Dachshund puppy biting is to provide unambiguous, straightforward guidance and be consistent. Use positive training techniques. Reward progress and behaviors you desire, and be certain that everybody involved with your Dachshund is on the same page and not providing mixed messages. Think about your daily interactions with your Dachshund puppy. If you have an issue with Dachshund puppy biting then you may want to stop any games of tug. Dachshunds still have a hunting urge and can be rather ferocious when grabbing and pulling on a tug toy.

Stopping a Dachsund Puppy from Biting
When your Dachshund puppy nips you is your first thought to hit them? If so, think again, this is not the right action to take. The best thing to do is to demonstrate to them biting is not all right. Say “No” in a firm tone, or make a loud yelp (this is an effective way to interrupt biting as it mimics the sound that another puppy would make when bitten). Give them one of their own toys to play with, praising them when they start to chew it.

If you are consistent with this approach you will soon observe that your Dachshund puppy stops biting you, only chewing on their toys. You can use this method with any dog of any age, however it may take longer before you see results if your Dachsund is older.

If your Dachsund is more aggressive than just giving the odd nip or gentle bite you have to go to puppy or dog training classes or get the advice of a veterinary behaviorist. Training programs offer an environment where your Dachshund can be well socialized with new dogs and people, and where your Dachshund puppy biting problem can be addressed by a professional. As a responsible Dachshund owner you need to provide for the physical and mental wellbeing of your Dachsund. This involves training them and addressing any problems that arise before they become severe.
