Looking After Your First Dog

If you’re considering getting a dog, the chances are you’re already in love with these friendly, loyal creatures – but do you know how to look after one? Of course, it makes sense that your dog will need to be fed, watered and taken outside regularly, but is that really all there is to dog ownership? Not exactly – though they make for a good starting point!

Like any living thing, dogs require a set kind of care in order to become their healthiest. While their diets are more varied than some other animals, they do need to consume a certain set of nutrients in order to stay healthy. You should pay attention to dog food labels when you purchase it and get the type best suited to your dog’s age and, when making the choice between feeding your dog wet and dry food, bear in mind that dry food is good for your dog’s teeth as the biscuits help to keep them plaque-free and strong.

Water should be provided at all times and, as a responsible owner, you should be prepared to have your dog undergo training in order to ensure it understands and obeys basic commands. As dogs can be fiercely protective of their owners, it is important to teach your dog to obey certain commands and how to behave in company. That way, you’ll be able to avoid your dog ever getting out of control around other dogs or people. While it may not mean to harm others, poorly-trained dogs are known for misbehaving and even hurting other dogs or people.

Your dog will need to be walked regularly and, depending on the age and breed of your pup, length and frequency will vary. Most dogs should get outside at least twice a day, if only to go to the toilet, and you should ensure your dog gets the exercise it needs to remain healthy and happy. If your dog is restless and overly-playful at home, the chances are it has too much energy pent up because of a lack of exercise – so take your dog out often if you want to avoid chewed shoes!

Your dog will also need to visit the vet regularly to keep up with health checks and inoculations. Some good dog insurance policies will help you offset the cost for these treatments. Otherwise, just be sure to give your dog plenty of love, attention and cuddles and you will be well on the way to making a new friend for life!
